Overcoming the “F” Word

  • Why don’t more of us chase our dreams? Why are so many of us playing out lives of frustration and underachievement. Why do we worry about the future, hide our talents and kill our own dreams. Why do we find a good excuse more attractive than an actual accomplishment. Why do so few even try to reach their goals? So whats really holding you back? No matter what your answer may be to these questions in most instances it boils down to FEAR, in some form or fashion.

Fear is the greatest obstacle to success. Fear robs us of happiness and freedom. It is fear that steals our peace of mind and causes us to settle for far less than what we deserve. It has been noted that fear is the root cause of negative emotions, unhappiness, and problems in human relationships. The only positive aspect of fear is that it is a learned behavior that can also be unlearned.

Each of us to some degree or another suffers from one or more of the four basic fears, which includes the fear of poverty, fear of death, fear of change, or fear of failure itself. Some people suffer from all of them. However, courageous people move on in spite of there fears. When you aren’t afraid to confront your fears, and instead of backing away from them you press forward, they begin to fade away. When you run from your fears they can grow to the point that they dominate your life.

Listed Below are a few ways that you can push fear out take back control of your life.

    1. Take Small Steps to Face Your Fear and Become Stronger
Every time you face a fear you gain 3 important qualities you gain strength, courage and confidence. I guess you could say that you gradually numb yourself to whatever you are afraid of. Or, seeing it in a more motivating way, building courage and expanding your comfort zone in this part of your life. So, identify your fear. Then make a plan with some smaller steps you can take to gradually lessen your discomfort. If you have to handle a big fear, you might think to yourself that what you thought was a fear before wasn’t that much to be afraid of at all. In fact, many things in life you may have feared previously seems to shrink. Those fears become smaller. They might even disappear. But may never know until you really have to step up and face your fear.

    2. Take Action
Getting to the stage where you really feel that you need to stop waiting and take action can take some time. One way to get moving is to replace some of your negative thoughts, that creates negative feelings, with clear, positive reasons to get going. Dale Carnegie has a great quote “Inaction breeds doubt and fear. Action breeds confidence and courage. If you want to conquer fear, do not sit home and think about it. Go out and get busy.” Most times we get the courage we need after we have done what we feared.

    3. Live in the Now
The ego wants to divide your world and remind you of your past mistakes. It wants to create barriers , and it loves to play the comparison game. The game where people are different compared to you, the game where you are better than someone and worse than someone else. These actions simply creates fear. Doing the opposite removes fear. Focusing on the now not only reduces fear but also increases the chance of you succeeding because your mind is focused on the task at hand. It also makes it easier to succeed because when you are in the now you are not that self-conscious, something that can quickly lead to insecurity, but instead focused on the outside world and people you are interacting with.

    4. Redefine Your Reality
To change yourself and overcome fear you have to be prepared and willing to redefine yourself. No one can do it for you. But if you do you can make, what may seem to you to be, big progress pretty quickly. And when you get used to it and these things become more and more habitual and you will begin to do them naturally. If you are prepared, you can rewrite what you believe as the truth about yourself and your personality, thoughts, actions and emotions.

    Hey Evin,

Great words and tips for people to do to overcome their fears. I have had many fears and recently I have experienced anxiety attacks which have been very debilitating.

Overall I would say that I tend to face fear head on. Sometimes we over think a situation, thinking something is going to be much worse than it actually is.

I have learnt facing fears, taking action and overcoming that fear and recognising the achievement is a powerful way to make headway and moving forward.

    I love the video too!
    Beth :-)

  • Fantastic post, Evin! I run into this with clients all the time. In fact, it’s so normal we often don’t realize where our problem is coming from.

Fear is our primitive protector – ouch, that stove was hot, now I’m afraid to touch stoves again. That’s a smart move. But it doesn’t translate well into some higher levels -ouch, that person didn’t like my business idea, now I’m afraid to talk to anyone about it.

We have to learn to decide if each individual stove is hot – hold your hand closer to see if it feels warm. Same with people – talk to them, see how they feel about a little of your idea before you give them the whole thing. Make a judgment call from there whether you should share more or change the subject.

Looking forward to your next great post!
